TfL Ref: 0071-2223

Thank you for your request received by us on 8 April 2022 asking for information about any plans Transport for London (TfL) may have to introduce 5G apparatus.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

recorded information on any plans to introduce 5 g, where masts are to be situated and where masts or any kind of 5G apparatus is to be used on lamp posts

TfL is not a Mobile Network Operator (MNO), and therefore does not install or operate any 5G equipment. However, in some instances TfL is landlord for such operators to install mobile network equipment on its estate. Whilst MNO’s are investigating the upgrade of sites to 5G, they have not yet upgraded any TfL sites. Any sites NMO’s plan to upgrade will be subject to planning permission and therefore be in the public domain.

Please also see the following content on TfL website relating to mobile phone coverage on the London Underground network, which may be of interest via:

In the meantime, we can advise that whilst all coverage is currently via 4G, there are no concrete plans for introducing 5G on any lampposts in the TfL estate.
