You asked

I'd like to make an FOI regarding TFLs bus electrification, in connection with the current financial crisis being faced due to the pandemic. 1) Will the bus electrification continue regardless of financial support from central government? 2) Will only new Zero Emission Electric & Hydrogen buses be ordered (previously stated by the mayor)? 3) Will all TFL Buses be 100% Zero Emission by 2030 or 2034 at the latest? 4) Will conventional Diesel buses continue to phased out of service? 5) What is the plan for Hybrid buses? 6) Could you please share any information you hold about the advantages of Hybrid buses compared to conventional Diesels?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0055-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 7th April 2022 asking for information about bus electrification.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Your questions are answered in turn below:

Question 1) Will the bus electrification continue regardless of financial support from central government?

Answer: Full fleet electrification is unlikely to continue if long-term funding is not received from the Government.

Question 2) Will only new Zero Emission Electric & Hydrogen buses be ordered (previously stated by the mayor)?

Answer: Where cost effective to TfL, new zero-emission buses will be ordered. However, if TfL goes into managed decline due to lack of long-term funding more zero-emission buses will not be ordered.

Question 3) Will all TFL Buses be 100% Zero Emission by 2030 or 2034 at the latest?

Answer: TfL’s target for a zero-emission bus fleet is 2034. However, due to funding uncertainties, this date will be effected if TfL goes into managed decline due to lack of long term funding.

Question 4) Will conventional Diesel buses continue to phased out of service?

Answer: These buses will continue in service in the TfL bus fleet until contractually committed. New conventional diesel buses will no longer be procured into the TfL bus fleet.

Question 5) What is the plan for Hybrid buses?

Answer: These buses will continue in service in the TfL bus fleet until contractually committed. New hybrid buses will no longer be procured into the TfL bus fleet.

Question 6) Could you please share any information you hold about the advantages of Hybrid buses compared to conventional Diesels?

Answer: To help reduce carbon emissions from the TfL bus fleet, TfL have over 3,500 double deck hybrid buses in the fleet. Hybrid buses can help to reduce carbon emissions by up to 30% when compared to diesel buses.
