We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0040-2122 Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 7th April 2021. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. Specifically you asked: “I request information for a university research on the impact of urban mobility in sustainability. I submitted a request for information regarding info for 2013 until 2019 of: - number of paper tickets sold per year - estimated cost of an oyster card. - Trips made with contactless bank card vs. oyster vs. paper tickets. - CO2 and other ghg emissions per trip or per full year” In answer to your first three questions, the tables below show the number of paper (magnetic) tickets issued and the number of trips made with magnetic tickets, Oyster Cards and via contactless payment cards (CPCs – which include smartcards as well as smart devices) in each year since 2013. In terms of the cost of Oyster cards, we estimate that procurement costs would be an average of 65p-70p per card. Contractor costs to enable the cards are in addition and are estimated as 15p per card. This also includes normalised data on emissions per passenger km on these modes – 2019/20 is excluded as the impact of the first lockdown in March 2020 reduced passenger numbers.
