FOI request detail

Pest Control on the Underground

Request ID: FOI-0013-1920
Date published: 18 April 2019

You asked

I request the annual cost of pest control (regarding vermin - rats and mice), specifically 2016/17, 2017/18, and 2018/19. I understand that the cost of 2015/16 was made available in a previous FOI request, as published on your website. https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-0460-1718 I also request clarification regarding the proportion of pest control that was undertaken "in-house". (As seen in the previous FOI request). Could you clarify what this means?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0013-1920

Thank you for your further Freedom of Information request received by TfL on 31st March 2019 asking for information about the cost of pest control on the London Underground

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require. However, I am afraid it is still not possible to address your questions within the £450 costs limit, for the same reasons stated previously under case reference FOI-3258-1819. There is no single source of information for spending on pest control, and to provide the requested figures would require gathering information from across a number of contracts and a number of London Underground commercial teams for the three years in question, which could only be achieved at disproportionate cost. However, that said, I have been able to establish that there would have been only a minimal difference for each year in question, as 95% of control activities are on a planned programme with fixed resources. It is estimated that the figures for each of the years 2016/2017 through to 2018/2019 would have been within 3-5% as that for 2015/2016, quoted in the previous FOI response to which you refer (£1,088,484.92). I have also established that all pest-control activity on the London Underground is carried out by specialist contractors.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,

David Wells
