TfL Ref 0004-2122
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 1 April 2021 asking for information about Environmental Impact Assessments for vibration caused by buses.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy.
Unfortunately we do not hold the information you have requested. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) tend to be carried out for projects and initiatives rather than for business as usual activities. Buses are type ‘approved’ by DVLA to meet all legislation; once approved they can run on any highway in the UK, (subject to physical constrains such as low structures). However, a route test is usually carried out prior to running buses along a road and representatives from the local authority and police are invited to attend as they are responsible for traffic management and road safety. We would not run a bus service along a road that wasn’t suitable.
While we do not do not conduct research into ground-borne vibration, we understand studies have been undertaken by the Building Research Establishment and these suggest there is little evidence that this vibration produces cracking in buildings. The link to the most recent study is here: https://www.brebookshop.com/details.jsp?id=325231
If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
