Catford Town Centre realignment project

Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO)

We're working with the London Borough of Lewisham to support their ambition to transform Catford Town Centre and improve transport in the area.

The proposed changes include:

  • Re-alignment of the existing highway gyratory in Catford town centre on the South Circular A205 Catford Road
  • Conversion of the one-way gyratory system around Plassy Island to two-way operation
  • New crossings and layout improvements to existing crossings
  • Widening of footways
  • Dedicated cycling facilities on both the A205 and A21
  • Replacement access route to the St Dunstan's College Jubilee sport ground
  • Enhanced infrastructure including tree planting, permeable paving and sustainable drainage systems
  • Reduction in the negative impact the highways will have on the surroundings

The principal objectives for the scheme are to:

  • Reduce traffic volumes through the town centre, leaving more space for buses, cyclists and local access traffic
  • Make it easier to get around the town centre while reducing vehicle traffic noise, pollution and visual intrusion
  • Enhance facilities for vulnerable road users, specifically by improving crossings and facilities for cyclists
  • Contribute to the regeneration of the town centre by decreasing traffic dominance
  • Improve public areas, increasing the ambience of the town centre and making it a 'place'
  • Create better public spaces to improve conditions for people living working or travelling through the area

The Statement of Reasons has more information about our improvement plans.

Most of the land required for the scheme is owned by TfL or the London Borough of Lewisham. However, to complete the project, we need some land that we currently do not own - that is why we have made a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO).

If you are affected by the CPO and want to discuss this with one of our team, email CatfordCPO@tfl.gov.uk.

We consulted on the changes to the South Circular Road in 2023. See the Catford Town Centre consultation page.

CPO Statement of Case and core documents

We have now submitted our Statement of Case in support of the CPO to the Secretary of State. The documents which we intend to refer to or put in evidence at a public inquiry are listed in and linked in the core documents list.
