A40 Westway works

Travel advice for major closures of the Westway between July and October 2024.

We need to close parts of the Westway between 21 July and October 2024. This is so we can replace 4 expansion joints that are a critical part of the structure.

We will carry out these closures in 2 stages:

  • From 22:00 on 21 July to late August - eastbound 'off' slip and Southbound West Cross Route (now complete)
  • From early September to mid-October - westbound 'on' slip and northbound West Cross Route

Traffic will be diverted during the closures.

Plan ahead, allow more time for your journey, and check before you travel.

Driving

From Monday 2 September to Mid-October 2024 these roads will be closed:

  • Westbound 'on' slip from the A3220 West Cross Route to the A40 Westway via the Westway roundabout and 'off' slip from Westway roundabout to the A40
  • Northbound only: the A3220 West Cross Route from Holland Park roundabout to the Westway foundabout

You will not be able to get to the A3220 West Cross Route or the A40 Westway travelling north from Holland Park foundabout and the junction with Uxbridge Road.

  • Diversion routes and local roads will be extremely busy
  • There will be delays on these roads: Uxbridge Road, Holland Road, Holland Park Avenue, Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush Green and northbound approaches to Wood Lane
  • There will be long delays to join the A40
  • The southbound A3220 West Cross Route and off slips from the A40 Westway will be open

To get to the A40, use either:

  • The A4 and A406 or
  • The A312 The Parkway

Plan ahead, allow more time for your journey, and check before you travel.

Buses

No buses use the roads which will be closed. But increased traffic will cause delays and increase journey times, especially in Wood Lane.

These buses will be affected by delays: 7, 13, 23, 27, 31, 49, 70, 72, 94, 95, 148, 207, 211, 220, 226, 237, 260, 267 272, 283, 295, 306, 316, 414, 452, 607, C1, C3.

From Monday 2 September to Saturday 12 October 2024 between 06.00 and 22.00, route 148 will terminate at Shepherd's Bush Green Stop E (Shepherd's Bush Station south side). Pick up will be from Stop X (Shepherd's Bush Station north side).

During these times the 148 will not serve Wood Lane or White City Bus Station. The night service (22.00-06.00) runs as usual.

Last bus departs White City:

  • Monday-Friday: 05:55
  • Saturday: 05:47
  • Sunday: 05:38

First bus to continue through to White City arrives:

  • Monday-Friday: 22:08
  • Saturday: 22:07
  • Sunday: 22:06

Tube and rail

Tube and local rail services are not affected by the closure. They may be the best ways of travelling nearby.

Westfield White City Shopping Centre

To get to Westfield White City, use local public transport, walking or cycling where possible.

  • There is cycle parking at Westfield. Find cycle parking
  • You can hire or return a bike or e-bike at multiple Santander Cycles docking stations in the immediate area
  • These Tube and rail stations are nearby: Shepherd's Bush (Central line and London Overground) and Wood Lane (Hammersmith & City and Circle lines)
  • Buses stop directly outside Westfield White City
  • You will be able to drive to Westfield White City via Wood Lane but is expected to be extremely busy.
