Using mobile payments is the same as using pay as you go with a contactless payment card. You:

  • Must touch in and out on Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, Emirates Air Line and Thames Clippers River Bus services to pay the right fare
  • Only touch in on buses and trams

Make sure your mobile payment app is ready to make a payment before you board a bus or tram, or as you approach a ticket gate, then touch the top half of your phone flat on the card reader.

Always use the same payment method

Whichever method of payment you choose, you must use the same one every time to pay the right fare. For example, if you touch in at the start of a journey using your mobile payment app and touch out at the end with your contactless payment card, they'll be treated as separate devices, and you:

  • Will be charged maximum fares for incomplete journeys
  • May not benefit from daily and weekly (Monday to Sunday) capping

Watch out for card clash

If you keep a contactless payment or Oyster card in your phone case, you should remove it before using your mobile payment app to touch in and out. If you don't, you could pay for travel with a card you didn't intend to pay with.
