Benefits and eligibility

Pay as you go at half the adult rate on buses and trams, and 50% off 7 Day and monthly (up to 6 months) Bus & Tram Passes.

To be eligible for a Bus & Tram Discount photocard you must be:

  • Living in a London borough and
  • Aged between 18 and 60 and
  • Receiving Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance*, or Employment and Support Allowance and
  • Getting no other free or discounted travel

* You must have been receiving Jobseeker's Allowance for a minimum of 13 weeks.

How do I apply?

Income Support or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If you're on Income Support or Employment and Support Allowance, download and print the Bus & Tram Discount scheme application form below. Once you've filled in your form, you need to take it to a post office in London.

You need to:

  • Read the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Notice on the application form
  • Complete and sign the form
  • Take your completed application form to a Post Office® branch in London - you must apply in person. You also need to take with you:
  • Two full face passport-type photographs of your head and shoulders. This must be a true likeness of you, with your full name written in capitals on the back. Your full face must be visible; you should not be wearing anything that covers your head unless it is consistently worn for medical or religious reasons
  • Proof of identity - one of the following showing your current name:
         - a valid passport or ID card from a European Economic Area country
         - current driving licence
         - active bank card
         - Post Office Account card
         - birth certificate
         - marriage certificate
         - divorce/separation/annulment papers
         - NHS medical card
         - a residential utility bill issued within the last 3 months (mobile phone bills are not accepted)
         - Biometric Residence Permit
         - Home Office Application Registration Card
  • Your benefit entitlement letter from the Department for Work and Pensions or Jobcentre Plus showing your current London address. This letter must be the original (not a photocopy). If your letter is more than 3 months old, you will also need to show a bank statement issued within the last 3 months showing that you still receive the appropriate benefit payments. If your benefit is paid by cheque you can show the cheque, in addition to your benefit entitlement letter, instead of a bank statement

Post Office staff will check your documents and photographs and issue you with a Bus & Tram Discount photocard.

Jobseeker's Allowance

If you're on Jobseeker's Allowance you must download and print the application form below and take it to your Jobcentre Plus branch to get it validated.

You need to:

  • Read the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Notice on the application form
  • Complete and sign the form
  • Get your form validated by your Jobcentre Plus advisor
  • Take your completed, validated application form to a Post Office branch in London - you must apply in person

You also need to take with you:

  • Two full face passport-type photographs of your head and shoulders. This must be a true likeness of you, with your full name written in capitals on the back. Your full face must be visible and you should not be wearing anything that covers your head unless it is consistently worn for medical or religious reasons
  • Proof of identity - one of the following showing your current name
         - a valid passport

Post Office staff will check your documents and photographs and issue you with a Bus & Tram Discount photocard.

If necessary, Jobcentre Plus staff can help you complete the form.

Speak to your Jobcentre Plus Work coach for information on whether you are eligible for the Bus and Tram Discount scheme.

Using your photocard

To get the Bus & Tram Discount, you'll have to get an Oyster card (if you don't already have one), register it, and then have your discount added.

Just go to any Oyster Ticket Stop or Tube station and ask the staff to put your discount onto your Oyster card. They can also register it at the same time. 

Once you've got your photocard and Oyster card, please remember to:

  • Carry your photocard and Oyster card together at all times when you travel
  • Touch in on the yellow card readers at the start of every journey

You cannot give your Bus & Tram Discount photocard, or Oyster card, to anyone else to use.

Expiry

Your photocard is valid for six months.
