Hammersmith Bridge

The Council's work is designed to make the bridge safe and allow its continued use by pedestrians and cyclists. Work is expected to finish in early 2023.

While the work is going on, people cycling and riding electric scooters must dismount and walk across the bridge.

The closure and re-opening of Hammersmith Bridge

The bridge closed to motor traffic in 2019 and to all traffic in 2020 because of concerns about cracking in the infrastructure.

The Council reopened the bridge to foot, cycle and river traffic in July 2021 after safety engineers advised it was safe to do so. This followed detailed investigations and the addition of a temperature control system.

Several bus services use alternative routes to cross the river. For the latest service information and to plan your journey please visit Journey Planner or TfL Go.

Hammersmith Bridge Taskforce

The Hammersmith Bridge Taskforce was set up by the Department for Transport in September 2020 to work towards safely reopening the bridge to full use. The Taskforce is chaired by Baroness Vere and includes representatives from TfL, the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Network Rail, the Greater London Authority and the Port of London Authority.

Look under 'Announcements' on Baroness Vere's web page for notes from the latest Taskforce meeting.

Temporary ferry

In November 2021 the Taskforce decided the proposed temporary ferry service was no longer needed. This followed reassurances from Hammersmith & Fulham Council that the bridge will not need to close again to people walking and cycling for any long period.

If this situation changes - and if it is agreed with the Taskforce - we will restart planning for a temporary ferry service.

Fixing the bridge - next steps

We're supporting the Council to find a way to fully reopen Hammersmith Bridge to traffic as soon as possible. The bridge is an important transport link and reinstating bus links across the river is our priority.
