Colindale station step-free access

What we're doing

Colindale will get an upgraded Northern line station. Colindale is one of London's fastest-growing neighbourhoods, which has grown by 70% since 2011.

The Colindale station improvements include:

  • A new building that replaces the existing entrance. This will serve as an important gateway to the wider Colindale area
  • A spacious new ticket hall, increasing station capacity to accommodate the projected growth in customers
  • A lift to offer step-free access from the street to platform level. Which will offer level access to trains when combined with the existing platform humps
  • An accessible toilet with infant changing facility
  • Infrastructure improvements and more cycle parking
  • A new in-station retail space
  • A sustainable blue-and-green roof drainage system with wild plants

Barnet Council has given planning approval for the station building project. Any further residential development in the area will need a separate new planning application.

Closures

Doing this work safely will mean that partial closures of the Northern line (Edgware branch) are necessary. Colindale station will also need to be closed temporarily.

Track closures

The Northern line between Edgware and Golders Green will close on the following dates in 2024:

  • From Tuesday 2 to Thursday 11 April
  • Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June
  • Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June
  • Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June
  • Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July

Northern line trains will keep running to and from Golders Green during this time. There'll be regular service on the rest of the Northern line.

Station closure

Colindale station will close from Friday 7 June until December 2024. This is to enable the major construction works to begin. It includes the removal of the existing canopy and staircases. Along with the installation of the new staircases.

The station will reopen to customers in December 2024. Customers will access the platform via the existing ticket hall and new staircases, while the rest of the new station is still under construction.

The new station entrance will reopen in autumn 2025. The station car park has now permanently closed to enable initial works to start.

Minimising impact

The Northern Line will close between Edgware and Golders Green to enable demolition and construction work above the existing platform, stairs and tracks.

The foundations and structural columns can only be installed safely when there are no passenger trains running. These works aren't possible during overnight engineering hours, because one column can't be completed between the last train and the first train the next day.

The station will need to close between 7 June and December 2024 during construction. We considered a temporary entrance with a bridge and staircase at the southern end of the platform. Unfortunately, this was not possible for important safety reasons.

We've kept the closure duration to a minimum by reopening the station in a temporary state in December 2024.

We're exploring ways to improve local bus services to nearby Tube stations during the closure. We'll update this page when we have more information.

We're also working with Barnet Council to keep impacts on neighbours and customers to a minimum.

Funding the work

The scheme is funded by the Government's Levelling Up Fund, as well as contributions from Barnet Council, local developers and TfL.
