A23 Streatham Hill

All local street users will benefit from new ways to cross busy roads, segregated space for people to cycle and improved bus journey times.

What we're doing

Improvements for walking and cycling in Streatham include:

  • Making walking safer and easier by building 2 new pedestrian crossings and moving existing crossings to places where people want to cross
  • New protected cycle lanes to make cycling safer throughout the scheme
  • Improvements to bus lanes by moving parking and loading bays out of them, making it easier for buses to travel in the lanes
  • Changing some access to local side roads including restrictions and closures. This will improve road safety on the A23 and minimise vehicle movements across the protected cycle lane, reducing danger to people cycling
  • Making public spaces more attractive for everyone, including by planting new trees and landscaping, as well as sustainable drainage to reduce the risk of flooding
  • New traffic signals at the Telford Avenue junction, outside the Brixton Bus Garage

Why we're doing this

The A23 through Streatham has a poor safety record - a number of collisions have resulted in deaths and serious injuries.

This scheme has been designed to improve road safety for everyone, as well as to encourage people to walk, cycle and use buses. This supports the Mayor's target of 80% of all journeys being made by sustainable modes by 2041.

Stages of work

Our work at Streatham Hill is due to start in summer 2025 and finish in spring 2027.

We've planned our construction programme to reduce disruption for local residents and businesses as far as possible. We'll keep monitoring roads while the work is going on and will introduce local changes to signals to relieve congestion and help the bus network.

We will also coordinate with bus operators to minimise any impact on bus services as much as possible, including keeping 24/7 access to the bus garage. We're also working closely with Lambeth Council to monitor and address any impact on local side roads and the surrounding road network. Side road closures will be staggered to help residents get around.

How our work may affect you

We will temporarily change the way the A23 Streatham Hill operates during the work using a variety of measures - including with lane closures, road closures and bus stop suspensions.

Any changes will be designed to minimise the impact on local communities, bus passengers and road users.

We'll write to local residents and businesses throughout construction to make them aware of any work that may affect them.

A dedicated web page on traffic impacts and changes to local roads will be available on this website a few weeks before construction starts.

Consultation

In early 2020 we consulted on plans for the A23 Streatham Hill.

We received more than 1100 responses to the consultation - mostly from members of the public.

We asked how safe the proposals would make people feel when travelling through the area by walking, cycling, using public transport or using motor vehicles for personal or business journeys.

  • 83% of respondents thought the changes would make cycling through the area safer or a lot safer
  • 70% thought it would make walking safer or a lot safer
  • 43% and 42% of respondents respectively thought that the proposals would make no difference to the safety of those using public transport or motor vehicles to travel through the area

Our consultation report is on the A23 Streatham Hill consultation page.
