Skills & training

Along with the transport industry, the property and constructions sectors lack diversity in their workforces. They also face a skills challenge with the shortfall of people joining the industry. This is why we set up the Constructions Skills programme and the Built Environment Schools Outreach Programme.

Construction skills programme

We work with hard-to-reach groups of people who may need extra help to access these opportunities or who have traditionally not considered the variety of built environment roles available. We're also learning from organisations which can offer one-to-one advice and guidance to identify any of the barriers these people may face and how we can help to overcome them.

We have trained thousands of people so far who are interested in working in the construction industry and supported hundreds into jobs in the sector, including entry level roles, apprenticeships and skilled technical and managerial positions.

There are more than 150 careers pathways in the construction industry, from office to site-based roles, each of which offer a chance to develop a sustainable career in the sector.

Highlights of our work so far include:

  • Creating employed-led training hubs at Earl's Court, in Brixton and on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
  • Developing programmes with organisations such as Women into Construction, Bounce Back and Construction Youth Trust to support under-represented groups into opportunities on our programme
  • Enabling several local employment and training opportunities on our projects at Blackhorse Road, Beachwood Avenue and Kidbrooke

There will be local jobs and apprenticeships available on our property development sites over the next years - we want to help Londoners access these opportunities.

Built Environment Schools Outreach Programme

In 2021 we're launching a programme to work more closely with schools to inspire the next generation to consider a career in property and construction - the built environment.

Along with our development partners, we want to help young people make their way in professional and technical careers in our sector. This includes helping them access opportunities that will come up as we build thousands of homes across London.

You can find out more about the programme on the Property and construction skills page.
