What you'll need

  • You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSE's A*-C/ grade 4 or above (or equivalent) including Maths and English language.  
  • You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme. 
  • Please note that you will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof for your eligibility checks. 
  • You must be 18 by 13th January 2025 to be eligible for this scheme.

Our Fleet Engineers at London Underground play a vital role in maintaining and upgrading the operational efficiency and safety of our rolling stock. As a Fleet Engineer, your responsibility is crucial in maintaining our entire fleet of trains. 

You will be  up-to-date of the latest developments, ensuring our assets, both new and legacy, consistently operate at optimal levels. This role is pivotal in the continuous performance and safety of our transportation system. 

What you'll be doing

As a London Underground Fleet Apprentice, you'll undertake regular placements at our train care depots across London.

After receiving high quality classroom and on-the-job training from the fleet's dedicated trainers, you'll work alongside skilled train engineers and maintainers to learn how our various train systems work.

London Underground rolling stock has long since ceased to be 'clunk click' and is now a highly sophisticated piece of equipment requiring a raised level of technical competence to maintain it.

Under constant supervision, and working as part of a team, you'll learn and become proficient in both mechanical and electrical skills.

That'll help you contribute to the maintenance and fault repair of our varied rolling stock, ensuring a fast turn around and playing your part in keeping London moving.

Where this career can take you

Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a Train maintainer position which could lead to further career development opportunities such as Advanced Train Maintainer or Team leader positions.

At the end of the apprenticeship, you'll be at an Engineering Technician professional standard while there's no need this can be built upon to achieve Chartership status in the future.

You'll also have opportunities to complete extra training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training.
