In November 2014, we and our industry partners Crossrail, the Department for Transport (DfT), Network Rail, Women's Engineering Society (WES), Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS), and London Transport Museum (LTM), launched the 100 Years of Women in Transport programme (YOWIT). It was created to celebrate the significant role women have played in the transport industry, reflect on our current gender diversity and improve it further through initiatives, events and activities.

Two hundred representatives from across the transport industry attended our launch event which marked a commitment to refocusing efforts on improving diversity. Find out more about our launch event.

The YOWIT programme's range of inspiring and motivational activities included a:

  • Number of debates and panel discussions
  • Series of speed mentoring events
  • Teacher Industrial Partnership scheme
  • Bring your daughter to work day
  • Nationwide schools debating competition

We also set a Guinness World Record.

Because of the programme's success, we're going to continue YOWIT as a legacy campaign. Renamed Women in Transport (WIT) it will carry on delivering a full programme of events. We are also developing a purpose and brand for transport which is owned and championed by the industry. We'll use this to continue developing our workforce and inspire the next generation of transport professionals.

 Aims of Women in Transport

Our aim is to inspire current and future generations of transport workers. We're doing this by developing the workforce and inspiring the next generation.

Developing the workforce by:

  • Attracting more women by highlighting the careers on offer
  • Showcasing the contributions women have made, and continue to make in the industry
  • Providing opportunities for personal development and progression at all levels
  • Establishing an industry-wide network as a legacy of continued improvement and development
  • Running inspirational and thought-provoking events

Inspiring the next generation through:

  • Tackling the lack of understanding about what the transport industry stands for
  • Demonstrating why transport can be for anyone and everyone
  • Education, particularly of young people about the variety of roles on offer
  • Promoting a young people and schools engagement programme

Through development and inspiration, we hope to:

  • Support our industry and improve the way we respond to new challenges (including unprecedented levels of growth and development in London and across the UK)
  • Build our brand as the industry of choice
  • Contribute to London and the UK as a whole
