Mayor of London

Wimbledon to Croydon tram link

The Wimbledon Line Enhancement Programme will meet the Mayor’s long-standing pledge to increase capacity of Tramlink to match growth since opening in 2000. It is comprised of three distinct packages of work:

  • Double tracking between Beddington Lane and Mitcham Junction flyover
  • Constructing an additional platform for Tramlink at Wimbledon station
  • Adding four new trams to the 30-strong fleet

Delivery of the project will increase service along the entire route between Wimbledon and Croydon to 12 trams per hour, boosting capacity by 50%. This will reduce waiting times and increase reliability, as well as make for a better passenger experience.

The scheme will also increase connectivity of Wimbledon and Croydon town centre and is a crucial component in meeting the economic needs of south London in the future.

Who's involved?

We are working in partnership with Network Rail, South West Trains and the London Boroughs of Merton and Sutton.

Next steps

Construction of the additional platform at Wimbledon and the twin tracking will begin in mid-2014. The new service should begin operation in 2016.
