Northern line extension
The 3km twin-tunnel extension links Kennington station (Zone 1/2) with two new step-free stations - Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms (both Zone 1).
It gives access to the West End and the City within 15 minutes and supports thousands of jobs and homes.
The joint venture Ferrovial Agroman Laing O'Rouke designed and built the NLE.
Timeline of the NLE
- 2014: Secretary of State grants Transport and Works Act Order (November)
- 2015: Major construction work starts (November)
- 2017: Two tunnel boring machines - Helen and Amy - launch at Battersea (March) and break-through at Kennington (November). They are named in honour of the first British astronaut, Helen Sharman and British aviation pioneer, Amy Johnson, who was the first female pilot to fly solo from Britain to Australia
- 2018: Tunnelling work done for new customer passageways linking platforms at Kennington Tube station
- 2019: Track installation completed throughout the NLE. Engineering train travels the length of the extension for the first time (June)
- 2020: Power supplied to stations (November) and track is energised (December). Dynamic testing starts with first test passenger train travelling the length of the extension (December)
- 2021: Trial operations begin (July) followed by the start of passenger services (20 September)
