The Highbury Corner Bridge was built around 1850 and carries the Holloway Road (A1) over the London Overground line. The bridge also sits under the Highbury & Islington station building and forecourt.

The bridge was in a poor state of repair so we had to replace it. This will prevent the need for disruptive emergency closures in the future.

This new bridge has an expected lifespan of 120 years.

Three phases of the work

  • Phase 1: reconstruction of the bridge beneath the station forecourt (completed)
  • Phase 2: relocation of gas, water, electricity and telecommunication pipes and cables (completed)
  • Phase 3: complete bridge reconstruction (see Current works)

The bridge replacement works are part of our plan to improve London's roads and public spaces.

Current works

Essential work to demolish and rebuild the final section of Highbury Corner Bridge, below Holloway Road and above the London Overground lines, was completed successfully over the Christmas and New Year period 2017/2018.

The works progressed well and we were able to rebuild all the sections of bridge below Holloway Road. We were also able to start the final stage of works, such as resurfacing the road and finishing the kerbs and footways, earlier than planned.

We now expect to complete the final works to the new bridge in summer 2018.

Temporary changes to travel will remain in place while these works are finished.

Bus passengers

Two bus stops (stop A northbound and stop B southbound) have been moved further north on Holloway Road.

These bus stops will return to their original location nearer to Highbury Corner roundabout when the final works are finished.

An alternative cycle route is signed via Liverpool Road. Cyclists should use this route whenever possible to avoid the works at Highbury Corner.

Cyclist access between Holloway Road and Highbury Place has now been reopened to cyclists.

Road users

Some lane and road closures will be needed throughout the works.

Highbury Crescent (between Highbury Terrace and Highbury Place) will be closed until later in 2018. This area is being used to store equipment and for worksite cabins.

Hampton Court is now closed to traffic.

Highbury Station Road will be closed - bike racks will be moved there from the station forecourt.

Highbury Place to Holloway Road has now been reopened to vehicles and cycles.

Travelling on Arsenal match days

Changes to walking routes will stay in place on match days. The area outside Highbury & Islington station will be very busy for pedestrians. Please use alternative routes if you can or avoid travelling directly before and after matches.

Minimising noise and disruption

We are on site 08:00-20:00, Mondays-Saturdays and some Sundays while work to move the utility services continues. Extended working hours will be needed during some phases of the works.

Working times have been agreed with the London Borough of Islington.

We will do everything we can to reduce the impact of the demolition works, including:

  • Putting noise tents around cutting equipment
  • Using acoustic sound barriers around the worksite, where possible
  • Working with modern and silenced equipment
  • Delivering equipment and materials during daytime working hours, where possible
  • Having minimal vehicle movements overnight where possible and no idling at any time
  • Using dust suppressors such as water sprays

Our partners

We are working closely with Network Rail, London Underground, London Overground and the London Borough of Islington to minimise disruption and ensure the works proceed as safely, efficiently and quickly as possible.

The project is being delivered in partnership with our contractors, Hochtief (UK) Construction, Skanska UK, and Ramboll and Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Highbury Corner gyratory

Along with Islington Council, we consulted in February/March 2016 on proposals to improve cycling and pedestrian and facilities at Highbury Corner roundabout. This includes closing the western side of the roundabout to create two linked public spaces and building a new square in front of the station.

Having considered the feedback to the consultation, and subject to approvals, we intend to proceed with the changes to Highbury Corner.

Together with Islington Council we are developing the detail of the design for the scheme and, subject to securing the necessary technical and governance approvals, including environmental screening, aim to start construction during summer 2018.

Demolition and replacement video
