Elephant & Castle

Impression of Elephant & Castle post-construction

To make the area safer for cyclists and other road users, we have:

  • Provided segregated cycle lanes to support the growing number of people cycling through this area
  • Separated cyclists from turning motor traffic, and from buses at most bus stops. This will make cycling safer and more pleasant
  • Improved pedestrian crossings and removed the subways

We are also working with the London Borough of Southwark to transform the public space around Elephant & Castle.

The highway works are complete, although other improvements continue.

New two-way traffic system

We introduced a new two-way traffic system at the end of 2015 by closing in the south-eastern arm of the current roundabout, between New Kent Road and the Elephant & Castle Link Road.

As part of the changes, general traffic cannot turn left from Newington Causeway into New Kent Road, or turn right from New Kent Road into Newington Causeway. This applies permanently.

Cycle lanes open to cyclists

As part of the Elephant and Castle works, segregated cycle lanes at the junction are open and available for use.

To see how your journey might be affected, including traffic maps, see our traffic status tool.

We held a consultation on the upgrade in 2014. More information on the change is in the final consultation report on the Elephant & Castle consultation page.

The work is part of our Road Modernisation Plan.
