A23/A232 Fiveways Croydon

Our plans aim to:

  • Increase traffic capacity along the A23 and A232 to improve the reliability of journeys while accommodating the predicted increase in traffic
  • Reduce traffic levels on local roads
  • Improve the environment for pedestrians by simplifying crossings, widening footways, improving lighting and removing unnecessary signs
  • Enhance cycling facilities that link with existing cycle routes

Our preferred option - Proposal 2 - includes:

  • Widening the A23 where it crosses the railway by Waddon station
  • Widening the western end of Epsom Road
  • Converting Epsom Road to allow two-way traffic

We are also proposing updated cycling facilities and a new road design at Fiveways Corner. The reasoning behind our decision can be found in our preferred option report.

Survey works

We started survey works around Waddon Station and the Fiveways Corner in June 2016. The surveys will be completed in early 2017. The information from the surveys will help our ongoing scheme design, ahead of our next public consultation.

Travel advice during the survey works

Road users

All roads around Waddon and Fiveways Corner will remain open and there will be access to properties. However, some temporary lane closures will be needed and the area may be busier during the works as a result.

The lane closures will be in place on the following roads between 22:00 and 05:00 the following morning:

  • Croydon Road
  • Purley Way
  • Epsom Road
  • Denning Avenue
  • Stafford Road
  • Duppas Hill Road

Consider alternative routes and allow more time for your journeys, where possible, during the works. Visit tfl.gov.uk/trafficnews or follow @TfLTrafficNews on Twitter for the latest road travel information.

Bus services

Bus routes 119, 154, 157, 289, 407 and 410 may have bus stops temporarily suspended or relocated during these works.

To find out more about how your bus may be affected, visit tfl.gov.uk/bus/status or follow @TfLBusAlerts on Twitter for the latest bus updates.

2017 consultation

Ahead of our spring 2017 consultation, we'll discuss the updated proposals with stakeholders and affected property owners once we have done further design work.

We consulted on the principles of the scheme and two possible proposals early in 2015.

For the results of that consultation and the options considered, please visit the Fiveways Croydon consultation page.
