Notting Hill Carnival

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit the Notting Hill Carnival this year - the biggest event of its kind in Europe.

This event means that on Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August 2016:

  • Roads will be closed in the Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park areas, with a large number of pedestrians expected
  • Tube and rail will be the best way to get around London during the weekend. But some stations in west London will be busier than usual; some will be exit only or closed during the event; and Night Tube services won't apply on the Sunday and Monday nights
  • Buses around the event area will be on diversion or will terminate earlier than usual

To find out more about the event, visit the Notting Hill Carnival's website.

    Travel map

The map below shows the nearest bus stops and stations to the carnival route and viewing areas.

      Driving

To create a safe environment during the carnival there will be major road closures around Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park from 02:00 Sunday 28 August until 05:00 Tuesday 30 August.

If you can, avoid the parts of west London listed below, or allow extra time for your journey.

        • Clarendon Road in the west
        • Queensway in the east

        Traffic impact

Because of the closures above, traffic is likely to be slow-moving at:

        • Harrow Road
        • Holland Park Avenue
        • Notting Hill Gate
        • Bayswater Road

Local parking restrictions will apply. Find out more at Westminster City Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's sites.

        Tube

Tube and Rail will be the best way to get around London on the weekend, although stations in west London will be busier than usual

For safety reasons some stations may close temporarily to prevent overcrowding. It may be worthwhile walking part of your journey or finding an alternative route.

Changes to services in west London on Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August include:

        • Ladbroke Grove: closed on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday
        • Latimer Road: closed after 23:30 on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday
        • Notting Hill Gate: on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, the station will be exit-only between 11:00-19:00 and the Circle/District lines will not stop
        • Westbourne Park: exit-only between 11:00-18:00 and closed at 23:30 on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday
        • Royal Oak: exit-only after 11:00 and closed at 18:00 on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday

These nearby stations may be busier than usual:

Touching out at stations near the carnival

There will be times when you can't touch out as you leave a station as the ticket gates may be left open to help with congestion.

When this happens, we'll attempt to complete your journey for you. This can sometimes mean you pay more for the journey than expected, however this is refunded after the event.

If you're due a refund when we 'automatically complete' a journey, we will send your refund to the station you use most often. It loads on to your Oyster card automatically when you next touch your card on a yellow card reader, as you enter or leave the station.

Please be advised that you must have enough funds on your Oyster card to cover both journeys, bearing in mind you may be charged more than you think for the first journey as mentioned above.

More information on how to request a refund if you think you have been charged a maximum fare for a journey during Notting Hill Carnival can be found in our Oyster card refunds and replacements section.

        Planned engineering work

        • Northern line: From Saturday 27 to Monday 29 August, no service between Hampstead and Edgware while we replace track at Colindale
        • TfL Rail: From Sunday 28 to Monday 29 August, no service between Liverpool Street and Stratford while Network Rail carry out track improvement work
        • Check the National Rail website for details of rail engineering works

        Taxis & minicabs

Taxis and minicabs will run as normal, but some journey times will be affected by traffic in the area. Please re-route or allow plenty of time for your journey.
