During the Championships, some Tube, rail and bus journeys will be busier than usual at different times, depending on the session times. Find out the dates and times of the sessions here.


Some services to Stratford and key interchange stations will be busier than usual, especially on weekdays, as spectators make their way to and from the sessions. If you can, please consider changing the time or route of your journey, and leave more time to travel.

Busier stations and services

The following stations and services will be busier than usual eastbound from central London two hours before the sessions, and westbound to central London two hours after the sessions.

Around Stratford, the 97 and 388 will be diverted around two hours before and after each event.

Central London, Sunday 6 August

The IAAF World Championships Marathons take place in central London, starting and finishing on Tower Bridge. They follow a four lap route that takes in the Victoria Embankment, and roads within the City of London passing St Paul's Cathedral, The Guildhall and Bank Junction.

The Circle and District lines between Tower Hill and Westminster, as well as the following stations are likely to be busier than usual with spectators attending the marathons:

Between 04:00-20:00, the following buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their destination:

  • 4, 8,15, 15H, 17, 21, 23, 25, 26, 42, 43, 46, 56, 76, 78, 100, 133, 141, 242, 343, 344, 388, D3, RV1

Other travel changes

  • Taxis: Embankment Place and East Smithfield's (Royal Mint Court) taxi ranks will be suspended, and road closures may make it difficult to access other ranks
  • Coaches: may be on diversions or use alternative stops. Contact your coach operator for details about changes
  • Santander Cycles: The docking stations at Aldermanbury (The Guildhall), Bartholmew (Bank of England), Newgate Street (St Pauls), Queen Street 1 and 2, Queen Victoria Street (St Paul's), Tower Hill (Tower Gardens), Victoria Embankment (Somerset House), Victoria Embankment (Savoy) will be suspended from 00:01 to 19:00

Central London, Sunday 13 August

The IAAF World Championships Race Walking events will take place on Sunday 13 August on The Mall. The day will see three separate events on a 2km looped route.

There will be a small number of road closures around St James's Park and the Mall.

06:00 Saturday 12 August to 23:59 Sunday 13 August

  • The Mall (from Trafalgar Square to Constitution Hill)
  • Constitution Hill (from Duke of Wellington Place to The Mall)
  • Horse Guards Road
  • No access on to The Mall or Constitution Hill from Spur Road

Birdcage Walk will stay open, and traffic from Buckingham Gate can loop around Spur Road onto Birdcage Walk towards Parliament Square.

Sunday 13 August

In addition to the closures from Saturday, the following roads will be closed 05:00-23:59:

  • Great George Street (from Parliament Square to Buckingham Gate including Birdcage Walk)
  • Spur Road (from Buckingham Gate to Birdcage Walk)
  • Buckingham Gate (to be confirmed)

Deliveries in London

If you make or receive deliveries in central London or Stratford, talk to your customers and suppliers ahead of time. You may want to consider changing the times of your deliveries to avoid road closures, or using alternative routes that avoid busy areas.
