National Railcards

Benefits and eligibility

You may be eligible for one of a range of National Railcards which offer discounts on Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and National Rail services. They do not offer discounted fares on buses or trams:

  • 16-25 Railcard
  • 26-30 Railcard
  • Senior Railcard
  • HM Forces Railcard
  • Disabled Persons Railcard
  • Network Railcard
  • Family & Friends Railcard
  • Two Together Railcard

How much do I save?

The savings are slightly different for each card. They all include discounts on rail services during off-peak times and also:

  • Off-peak pay as you go fares
  • Daily caps for off-peak travel

You can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 09:30 or 10:00 Monday to Friday, according to the type of Railcard

Holders of Disabled Persons Railcards can also get discounted travel during peak hours.

16-25 Railcard

If you buy a 16-25 Railcard, you can get the discount set on a standard adult Oyster card or an 18+ Student Oyster photocard to get a 1/3 discount on off-peak rail travel.

You can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 09:30 Monday to Friday during July and August, or after 10:00 Monday to Friday the rest of the year

26-30 Railcard

If you buy a 26-30 Railcard, you can get the discount set on a standard adult Oyster card or an 18+ Student Oyster photocard to get a 1/3 discount on off-peak rail travel.

You can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 10:00 Monday to Friday

Senior Railcard

If you buy a Senior Railcard, you can get the discount set on a standard adult Oyster card to get 1/3 discount on off-peak rail travel.

You can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards to travel:

  • After 09:30 Monday to Friday

HM Forces Railcard

If you buy an HM Forces Railcard you can get the discount set on a standard adult Oyster card to get a 1/3 discount on off-peak rail travel.

You can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for yourself and up to four children aged between 5 and 15 to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 09:30 Monday to Friday during July and August or after 10:00 Monday to Friday the rest of the year

Please note that children travel free:

  • Up to two accompanied children under 5, on all TfL and National Rail services
  • Up to four accompanied children aged 5-10 on all TfL and some National Rail services
  • Children aged 5-10 with a 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard on all TfL and most National Rail services in London where pay as you go is accepted

If you have bought discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for children or accompanied children are travelling free, they must travel with you at all times. You must also buy a discounted Off-peak Day Travelcard for yourself.

Disabled Persons Railcard

If you buy a Disabled Persons Railcard you can get the discount set on a standard adult Oyster card to get a 1/3 discount on rail travel at any time.

If you're using Oyster to pay as you go, you can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for one adult aged 16 or over to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 09:30 Monday to Friday

If you're not using Oyster pay as you go, you can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for yourself and one adult aged 16 or over to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 09:30 Monday to Friday

Please note:

You must use your Disabled Persons Railcard with a valid ticket or Oyster card with the Railcard discount. If you also have a Disabled Person's Freedom Pass you cannot use the Disabled Persons Railcard to buy a discounted ticket for your companion, and then use your Freedom Pass to travel.

If you have bought a discounted Off-peak Day Travelcard for an accompanying adult, they must travel with you at all times.

Network Railcard

If you buy a Network Railcard you can buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for yourself, up to three adults aged 16 or over and up to four children aged between 5 and 15 to travel at any time on weekends and public holidays.

You can also buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for up to four children aged between 5 and 15 to travel after 1000 Monday to Friday, if you hold a Travelcard that covers all the zones of the discounted Day Travelcards.

Please note that children travel free:

  • Up to two accompanied children under 5, on all TfL and National Rail services
  • Up to four accompanied children aged 5-10 on all TfL and some National Rail services
  • Children aged 5-10 with a 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard on all TfL and most National Rail services in London where pay as you go is accepted

If you have bought discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for adults or children or accompanied children are travelling free, they must travel with you at all times. You must also buy a discounted Off-peak Day Travelcard for yourself unless you hold a Travelcard season ticket that covers all the zones of the discounted Day Travelcards.

Family & Friends Railcard

If you buy a Family & Friends Railcard, you can buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for yourself, up to three adults aged 16 or over and up to four children aged between 5 and 15 to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 09:30 Monday to Friday.

Please note that if two adults each have a Family & Friends Railcard, you can buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for up to two adults aged 16 or over only and up to four children.

Please note that children travel free:

  • Up to two accompanied children under 5, on all TfL and National Rail services
  • Up to four accompanied children aged 5-10 on all TfL and some National Rail services
  • Children aged 5-10 with a 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard on all TfL and most National Rail services in London where pay as you go is accepted

If you have bought discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for adults or children or accompanied children are travelling free, they must travel with you at all times. You must also buy a discounted Off-peak Day Travelcard for yourself.

Two Together Railcard

If you have a Two Together Railcard you can buy discounted Off-peak Day Travelcards for yourself and the other person named on the Railcard to travel:

  • At any time on weekends and public holidays
  • After 09:30 Monday to Friday

The discount cannot be set on an Oyster card.

Setting a Railcard discount on an Oyster card

If you have a 16-25, 26-30, Senior, HM Forces or Disabled Persons Railcard, the Railcard discount can be set on your Oyster card at:

  • Tube, London Overground and TfL Rail stations
  • Some National Rail station ticket offices
  • Oyster Ticket Stops (local shops and newsagents across London)
  • Visitor Centres

You must ask a member of staff to set the discount. You will need to:

  • Show your Railcard
  • Ask them to set the Railcard discount

If you don't already have one, you'll need to get an Oyster card and register it.

When you renew a Railcard, you will need to get the discount set again on your Oyster card.

Using your Railcard

  • Always show your Railcard when buying tickets from a ticket office
  • Always carry your Railcard as proof of your discount when travelling
  • Don't let anyone else use your Railcard or Oyster card with a Railcard discount
