FOI request detail

Putney Bridge phasing of lights

Request ID: FOI-4912-1718
Date published: 16 April 2018

You asked

Please detail if and why traffic light phasing on both sides of Putney Bridge has been altered in 2018 or late 2017. Significant traffic buildup now occurs on New Kings Road and Hurlingham Road during weekdays and weekends. This causes gridlock in local streets off Hurlingham Road and New Kings Road, and a significant rise in local pollution. Does TFL plan to address this gridlock and return to a freer flow of traffic as in the past by addressing light phasing.

Thank you for your email received on 17 March 2018 asking for information about traffic light phasing at Putney Bridge.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environment Information Regulations and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:

The traffic signal timings around Putney Bridge vary according to vehicle demand. As a result the length of green signal time given to each approach varies depending on the number of vehicles on the road. Unplanned incidents such as collisions can cause the vehicle demand to change, which would in turn affect the traffic signal timings.

We have looked at the signal timings from October 2017 to 18 March 2018, which we hope covers the time period that you requested as late 2017 to 2018.

The following changes to traffic signal timings have been made:

  • Saturday 21 October 2017 to Friday 27 October 2017 – signal timings changed to assist traffic displaced by Hammersmith Bridge closure

  • Saturday 10 February to Sunday 18 February 2018 – signal timings changed to assist traffic displaced by Hammersmith Bridge closure

  • Monday 5 March to Sunday 18 March - In line with the Mayor’s Healthy Streets initiatives and in collaboration with London Borough Wandsworth we are currently looking at ways to reduce traffic congestion and the impact of vehicle emissions in town centre locations like Putney High Street. Between these dates the traffic signals at Putney Bridge were running some trial timings to reduce congestion and idling traffic along Putney High Street, where there are high volumes of pedestrians. However this trial has now ended and the traffic signals are no longer running the trial timings.

  • There have been works on Fulham High Street during late 2017 and 2018 which have resulted in additional queues and congestion in the network. There were some changes to the traffic signal timings during the different phases of these works as well as a change in demand.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,

Melissa Nichols
