Employment Tribunal information
Request ID: FOI-4642-1718
Date published: 16 March 2018
You asked
How many Employment Tribunals TfL responded to in the period of 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2017 and during these tribunals how much was paid to settle cases and how much was spent on legal fees. If the amount of time set aside for FOIs is exceeded by this request, perhaps you could let me know just how many ETs there were for that period.
We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-4642-1718
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24 February 2018 asking for information about employment tribunals.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.
TfL is a large organisation employing approximately 28,400 employees. The Employment Tribunal claims that TfL defends represent significantly less than 1 per cent of the employee population. The number of claims brought against TfL has decreased significantly in recent years as a result of a proactive case management strategy.
The figures you have requested across 2016/17 are as follows:
- 55 ET cases were concluded
- Of those, 17 were settled
- Total value of settlement £309,000 (to the nearest thousand)
- External legal spend £465,000 (to the nearest thousand). Please note that this figure includes fees for all cases being handled during the financial year. It is not possible to extract spend only on those cases which were concluded and/or settled in that time period.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
