Request ID: FOI-4445-1718
Date published: 02 March 2018

You asked

I am a sixth form student currently doing a project for my Business Studies coursework. As part of my project, I must compare online sales to those in stores. One of the topics I have chosen is Oyster cards and would be grateful if you were able to provide me with the following information. I found this link from 2012 (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/locations_of_oyster_ticket_stops#incoming-305798), and was wondering whether you would be able to provide me with an updated version for the year of 2017? In addition, please can you provide information as to how many Oyster cards were sold in each shop in 2017, as well as how many top up transactions took place in each store for the same year

TfL Ref: 4445-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 February 2018 asking for information about Oyster card sales.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold of the information you require.

You asked: I found this link from 2012 (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/locations_of_oyster_ticket_stops#incoming-305798), and was wondering whether you would be able to provide me with an updated version for the year of 2017?

In addition, please can you provide information as to how many Oyster cards were sold in each shop in 2017, as well as how many top up transactions took place in each store for the same year.

Attached is a list of the Oyster ticket stops we currently hold.

We publish information on the total number of Oyster cards issued, per period, on our website: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/oyster-card#on-this-page-4

With regards to the second part of your request, in accordance with the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply some of the information as it is subject to a statutory exemption to the right of access to information under section 43(2). In this instance the section 43(2) exemption has been applied to the individual sales figures for each ticket stop, as it would be likely to prejudice our commercial interests by making shops less likely to become a ticket stop if they were aware that details of sales numbers were published;  we might therefore find it more difficult to recruit new agents in areas of low sales numbers thereby reducing the ticket options available to transport users.

The use of this exemption is subject to an assessment of the public interest in relation to the disclosure of the information concerned. We recognize the need for openness and transparency by public authorities, particularly where the expenditure of public money is concerned, but in this instance the public interest in ensuring that we are able to obtain the best value for public money as well as continuing to provide and expand an important service to customers outweighs the general public interest in increasing transparency of our processes.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
