FOI request detail

Carbon emissions of each London Underground service

Request ID: FOI-3812-1920
Date published: 22 April 2020

You asked

I recently reached out to TfL for data on the carbon emissions of each London Underground service and was informed you contact this team. Please can you advise how I can get access to this information, in particularly I’m looking to understand the per passenger kilometre emissions for each service and ideally how that is broken down.

We answered

Our ref: FOI-3812-1920

Thank you for your clarified request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 31 March 2020 asking for information about tube emissions.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our Information Access Policy. You asked for:

Data on the carbon emissions of each London Underground service

Data on specific London Underground (LU) emissions per passenger km is only available at the network level. We publish the total TfL figures for this annually in our annual Health, Safety and Environment report: http://content.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-hse-annual-report-2018-19.pdf. Within the total TfL value in the report, London Underground’s average emissions per passenger km in 2018/19 (the most recent for which full data is available) was 33.4 g CO2. We will publish emissions data for 2019/20 in the annual report later this year.

Due to how LU’s power is distributed and metered we do not break down this figure by specific lines or journeys.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Please note the Government has announced a series of measures to tackle the Coronavirus. It is essential for London, and in particular for all critical workers, that we continue to provide a safe transport network that enables them to make the journeys they need to.

In current circumstances, we are not able to answer FOI requests readily and we ask that you please do not make a request to us at present.

Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. In any event, please note that our response time will be affected by the current situation.

Yours sincerely,

Melissa Nichols
