Dear Transport for London, can i please ask your results of the reduction of 4 axle tipping vehicles . and using of short tipping trailers as an alternative. i have read your transport for london research and was encouraged that we can reduce vehicle movements and reduce emissions by using short maneuverable tipping trailers. capable of carrying 33% more . i would like to ask has any further information been made available ? can we purchase and use these trailers now ??

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 7 March 2020 asking for information about HGV vehicle evaluation research.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

In 2018, TfL commissioned a report - ‘Investigating the Construction Industry’s Use of HGV Types’.

The report undertook a technical comparison into the use of rigid versus articulated HGV combinations of Tippers and Mixers within the construction industry.  This study was initiated to look into the potential for using heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) with a higher payload to carry bulk construction materials in London, with a view to reducing overall HGV volumes.  Both vehicles types are legally compliant and currently operate on the UK road network.
