passenger entry and exit data for the tube
Request ID: FOI-3799-1920
Date published: 23 March 2020
You asked
Dear Transport for London,
I am currently working on a project related to transport. I looked at the TFL open data which provides entry and exit figures by station but it only provides annual totals for weekdays and weekend days. I would like to request the daily entry and exit data for all tube stations for each day of 2015 and 2019 - and per hour of the day.
Note: a similar request was done by xxx for 2013/2014 data and xxx for 2016/2017 data, the same output format would be great.
We answered
TfL Ref: 3799-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4 March 2020 asking for daily entry and exit data for all tube stations for each day of 2015 and 2019 broken down by hour of the day.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold some of the information you require.
We publish daily passenger entry and exits per station (our ‘Station Annual Counts’ dataset) on our website and data is available for the period 2007 to 2017 inclusive. 2018 and 2019 data will be available at the end of the March 2020: The link to the relevant pages is here: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance#on-this-page-2
For data at hourly level based on typical usage please see our Open Data pages available here: http://crowding.data.tfl.gov.uk/. 2018 data is currently available with 2019 data available from Summer 2019.
With reference to information we have provided previously, we have changed the data extraction method that we used to use as this data did not include contactless entries and exits and therefore is not used anymore. Unfortunately, no code or pre-canned reports exist to routinely extract data of this scale and it would significantly exceed the Appropriate Limit and Fees Regulations under the provisions of section 12 of the FOI Act to extract the data for the period you have requested.
The Government announced new measures on 16 March 2020 to tackle the Coronavirus. It is critical for London, and in particular for all essential workers and services, that we continue to provide the best transport service we can.
If you are considering submitting an FOI request we urge you to think carefully whether the request is essential at this time. Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity.
Where requests are made, please note that our response time is likely to be affected by the current situation. If you do submit a request, please use the form below or email [email protected] rather than send by post.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
