We answered
TfL Ref: 3577-1920
Thank you for your clarified request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24 February 2020 asking for information about 2019 annual passenger figures on the DLR.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Unfortunately we do not hold the exact information you have requested, ie an actual annual figure for 2019 for the number of passengers that travelled on the DLR starting at Cutty Sark at Maritime Greenwich and ending at Island Gardens (that is just one stop) or the reverse journey (Island Gardens to Cutty Sark at Maritime Greenwich).
The reason for this is that we do not routinely record origins and destination data across our networks on a day-by-day basis. We can calculate station origins and station destinations on the gated LU/rail network where customers use a smart ticketing product (Oyster or contactless) and we can join up their journeys. However the two stations you have asked about are ungated DLR stations and as not everybody will be tapping at these stations this it is likely that our raw ticketing data would under represent actual demand.
We do publish some other passenger journey data on our website which you may be interested in - the number of passenger entry and exits per station (our ‘Station Annual Counts’ dataset) which is available on our website for 2017 with the 2018 and 2019 data available from the end of the March 2020: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance#on-this-page-2
We also publish data for the number of journeys between the two stations on typical days on our open data pages available here: http://crowding.data.tfl.gov.uk/. 2018 data is currently available with 2019 data available from Summer 2019. The files you may be specifically interested in given your request are the files 2019DAY_OD_DLR.xlsx.
In order to provide assistance as much as possible, we have however taken the 2018 typical journey data as above and have applied an ‘annualisation factor’ - which is based on the actual number of DLR passengers for the year - to this ‘typical day’ data to approximate for what an annual figure would be for the stations you’ve asked about. (Just multiplying the daily figures by 365 (days in a year) would overestimate the annual demand because the typical demand refers to the typical “busiest” day usually in November of each year).
