Freedom of Information request - Piccadilly line operational issues
Request ID: FOI-3563-2223 Date published: 25 April 2023
You asked
Dear Transport for London,
I wondered if you could provide a breakdown or comparison for the number of train cancellations per month for each year 2017 through to 2022, and thus far in 2023 on the Piccadilly line alone?
Also, how many signal failures (not spads) have there been in the same periods on the Piccadilly line?
We answered
TfL Ref: 3563-2223 Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 28 March 2023 asking for information about London Underground’s Piccadilly line service. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for: a breakdown or comparison for the number of train cancellations per month for each year 2017 through to 2022, and thus far in 2023 on the Piccadilly line alone? Also, how many signal failures (not spads) have there been in the same periods on the Piccadilly line? We can advise that we publish the percentage of ‘Service Operated by TfL’ for London Underground services on our website, alongside the ‘Kilometres Operated for each Tube’ lines for the following periods of interests in the link below: .
Service Operated is available from 2018/19 onwards
Kilometres Operated from 2016/17 onwards
https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance. We consider that providing ‘Service Operated’ reporting information gives a more accurate measure of the service being delivered, in comparison to individual train cancellation numbers. However, as requested, please see the attached spreadsheet for signal failures by month on the Piccadilly line. As stated in the ‘Notes’ tab, the data featured here relates to failures of signalling equipment where the signals equipment was the cause of the failure, rather than signal failures caused by other root causes such as power issues, litter stuck in points signalling systems and so on..
In the meantime, there are major improvements and upgrades being developed for the Piccadilly line, including more investment in signalling, as explained here: https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/improvements-and-projects/piccadilly-line-upgrade?intcmp=67207 If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
