We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3451-2324

Thank you for your request which we received on 1 January 2024, asking for information about the removal of Palestinian flags.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

We are aware that there have been some instances of unauthorised flags on the road network in Tower Hamlets. It is important that infrastructure on our road network remains safe and clear of unauthorised objects and we are working to remove the flags when they are found, which we have also discussed with the borough.

You specifically asked for:

1) The number of Palestinian flags removed from TFL Routes/ Infrastructure across The Greater London Authority Jurisdiction from October 7th 2023 to 31st December 2023

Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide a specific number as in many cases these have been reported by our contractors as “removal of several”. However, I have attached a list with the date and location of Palestinian flags removed in London during the time period requested, which you may find helpful.

2) The cost of removal of the aforementioned flags during the stipulated period

We don’t hold this information. The removal of flags activity is carried out under a lump sum maintenance arrangement and we are unable to separate the cost of removal of this activity.

3) What does TFL intend to do with the flags, and if possible, can they be returned back to the public?

Unfortunately the flags cannot be returned. Any flags removed are disposed of on removal as this is normal process for any unauthorised items that have been attached to TfL assets.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
