In each of the calendar years 2016, 2017 and 2018, how many people who paid a penalty fare identified as students, and how many identified as university employees. Please give separate figures for each. Also please include the total number of penalty fares issued in each of the three years.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13 March 2019 asking for information about fare evasion and penalty fares issued.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked: In each of the calendar years 2016, 2017 and 2018, how many people who paid a penalty fare identified as students, and how many identified as university employees. Please give separate figures for each. Also please include the total number of penalty fares issued in each of the three years.
We do not ask for occupation/employment or study status details when issuing penalty fares notices so this information is not held.
The figures for the number of penalty fare notices (PFNs) issued by TfL ticket inspectors on all forms of transport in total in the last 5 (to date) financial years are below. We do not use calendar year for this type of data.
