We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3321-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9th March 2023 asking for information about bus driver toilets.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Can you confirm how many temporary bus driver toilets were installed across London and what was the cost of installing these?

How many toilets were subsequently removed and what was the cost of removing these?”.

On 13th March 2023 you clarified that this relates to the period from 1st January 2019 to the present.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

TfL recognises the importance of ensuring that bus drivers have access to toilets at all times of operation on all routes. We have invested in providing toilets or arranged access to third party facilities to ensure that this aim is met. All London’s bus routes have access to a toilet. Where circumstances allow, we ensure that access to rail or London Underground station toilets is available. The use of toilets at third party sites, such as cafes, restaurants, petrol stations and offices, can be arranged where appropriate and staff at these sites are made aware of the arrangement.
Turning to your specific questions, note that depending on who the provider is, and the scale of the project, costs are not always broken down into installation and removal fees. To answer the questions we have therefore had to generalise pricing from the date requested. With this in mind, since 1st January 2019 we have installed 76 temporary bus driver toilet units at an approximated cost of £50,300. Of these, 13 have been removed and the approximated cost of removal was £7,050. Temporary facilities are removed where alternative, permanent solutions have been provided, or in some rare instances due to other reasons such as criminal damage or local stakeholder opposition.
