We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3128-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 16th January 2020 asking for information about accessibility to buses for passengers in wheelchairs.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Please would you be able to tell me the percentage of bus stops currently on the TfL network which are suitable for wheelchair users who need to embark or disembark from a bus?”.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Making London a more accessible place is one of TfL’s key priorities. TfL has worked closely with the London Boroughs to increase the number of bus stops that are fully accessible. The latest data shows that 94.1 per cent of fixed bus stops within the London boundary (where responsibility lies with TfL) are fully accessible. However, given the constant changes to the highways and bus services, TfL believes that this figure has risen back up to around 95 per cent and that the next full audit of bus stops will indicate that.

Instructions on assisting passengers in wheelchairs are given to all bus drivers via the Big Red Book, TfL’s operational instruction manual. Wheelchair and mobility scooter users travel free on London’s buses, and wheelchair and mobility scooter users must be given access to the wheelchair priority area even if it is occupied by buggies and other customers.
