Cost of Wi-fi infrastructure in train and tube stations

Request ID: FOI-3031-1819
Date published: 28 February 2019

You asked

Hello TFL I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information. More than happy to help clarify any queries you may have, I can reply fairly instantly! 1. According to your website you state: "We have partnered with Virgin Media to bring Wi-Fi to over 260 London Underground stations and Victoria Coach Station - over 97% of the London Underground network." Could you explain how much the WIFI infrastructure costs TFL each year? For clarity, the "year" would be the TFL's financial year and the costs would be running costs. 2. Could you explain how many unique users use the WIFI provided on the London Underground. Can this be presented as the total number of accounts registered to use the service, and number of account who have used the service between 01/01/19 - 01/02/19. For clarity, my FOI attempts to look at the cost of the WIFI infrastructure on the underground and the amount of people who use it. Hopefully that will better explain my position! Do let me know if you would like any questions cleared up. Thank you!

I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require for question 1, as detailed below. For question 2, TfL does not hold the information.

On the first question, on costs, note that up until August 2018/19 the figures we hold encompass all WiFi provision including Head Offices, depots, and stations, and cannot be separated any further. From August 2018/19 the data is in relation to stations only, but note that this includes access for operational use by staff as well as public use. The costs below do not include the revenue that TfL receives from Virgin:

Year
