TfL Ref: FOI-3019-2223
Thank you for your request which we received on 15 February 2023, asking for information about penalty charge notices (PCNs) issued to vehicles driving in cycle lanes.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You specifically asked:
I was wondering if you'd be able to give the latest figure to date for the number of PCNs issued by TfL to motorists who have blocked cycle lanes under new powers entered into force in June last year?
Making London’s streets safer is our top priority. Cycle lanes play a vital role in keeping people cycling separated from motor traffic and in reducing the risk of collisions, which can cause death and serious injury. We began enforcement against vehicles that drive within, or cross, the white lines of cycle lanes on 23 June 2022.
As such enforcement is new, prior to issuing penalties we carried out a warning notice campaign where we issued warning letters, rather than PCNs, to vehicles breaching the restrictions. As at 3 February 2023 (our latest report) we issued 653 warning letters and 45 PCNs.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
