TfL Ref: FOI-2936-1718

Thank you for your email received on 14 January 2018 asking for information about bus passenger accidents and holding on.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold the information you require. You asked:

Please provide me with statistics for the number of accidents/injuries suffered by bus passengers. Please include their causes where known, including but not limited to whether "holding on" was a contributory factor.

We publish information about accidents/injuries on the bus network in our quarterly statistics, which can be found here .This will provide you with details of injuries reported to us by bus operators on the network, locations and dates.

The system which is mainly a statistical tool that records prima face details, is not able to categorise the many reasons why a person might come to fall such as if a bus was pulling away, so we cannot sub-categorise it further. However, we know anecdotally from discussions with bus operators who investigate them that this is often a primary cause and an area where more focus is required. As such, we already include smoothness of ride as part of bus driver training and performance through Driver Quality Monitoring and Mystery Traveller Surveys. The trial message “please hold-on while the bus is moving’’ is another step in this process, with the timing and wording since modified to help the public travel as safely as possible at all times, not just when the bus moves away from a stop.

In accordance with s21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to try and supply the requested information if it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,
