Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:
How many “diesel only” private hire vehicles were licensed throughout the whole of 2018?
Since 1 January 2018 all private hire vehicles (PHVs) licensed for the first time must have a Euro 6 petrol or diesel engine, or a Euro 4 petrol-hybrid engine. Out of 87,170 private hire vehicles licensed in 2018, 46,001 (52.77%) were diesel only. Of the 46,001 diesel only vehicles licensed in 2018, 8,367 (18.2%) were licenced for the first time.
