What happens to decommissioned ANPR cameras?

Request ID: FOI-2830-1819
Date published: 22 February 2019

You asked

The UK utilizes ANPR cameras for congestion charging, speed monitoring, tax & insurance verification, law enforcement investigation, etc. These ANPR cameras eventually get upgraded whilst the decommissioned cameras are removed. My question is what happens to these decommissioned cameras e.g. TFL awarded Siemens to install over 170 Sicore ANPR cameras for its speed monitoring - where are the decommissioned cameras? Are they still functional? Can one bid or lease these cameras for use in other locations outside the UK?

We answered

Thank you for your email received by us on 25 January 2019 asking for information about what happens to decommissioned Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Transport for London (TfL) complies with the EU’s Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive regarding the decommissioning and disposal of electronic equipment in an environmentally friendly way which encourages recycling of core materials.

From a London Road User Charging perspective, old ANPR Cameras have either been handed down for reconditioning and reuse or have been disposed of in accordance with the WEEE Directive.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
