You asked

Hello, please could you tell me why the Alfreds way flyover along the A13 in Barking has had its speed limit reduced to 30 mph from 40mph, when it was already in an average speed zone of 40 mph, as now with the reduced speed it causes traffic jams and stop start traffic which will increase pollution, when It use to flow, can you also tell me if there is emissions monitoring station near by

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2772-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 26th January 2023 asking for information about the Alfred Way flyover.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Hello, please could you tell me why the Alfreds way flyover along the A13 in Barking has had its speed limit reduced to 30 mph from 40mph, when it was already in an average speed zone of 40 mph, as now with the reduced speed it causes traffic jams and stop start traffic which will increase pollution, when It use to flow, can you also tell me if  there is emissions monitoring  station near by.”

The only speed reduction currently in place in this vicinity is over the existing Lodge Avenue Flyover at the junction with the A13, A123 Ripple Road and A1153 Lodge Avenue, which just covers the extent of the existing flyover. The speed limit was reduced from 40mph to 30mph on safety grounds after an inspection showed that the edge parapets are in worse condition than expected, in order to ensure the continued safe operation of the flyover and mitigate risks. The reduced speed limit will be in place until work to strengthen the parapets is completed in the beginning of June.
