Request ID: FOI-2744-1920
Date published: 02 January 2020

You asked

Could you provide details of any plans to extend the average speed camera system on the A406 North Circular Road to cover the section between Bounds Green and the Clockhouse Junction (where the A406 meets the A105 Green Lanes at Palmers Green)? Compliance with the 30mph limit through this section, particularly Westbound, is minimal, with the prevailing speed generally being closer to 40mph.

We don’t have any specific plans to extend the camera system on this road.

We are committed to delivering a Vision Zero approach to road danger reduction, to ultimately rid London's roads of death and serious injury. Following the end of the London Safety Camera Partnership in 2010, we have continued to fund, operate and maintain London’s safety camera network, which helps prevent a significant number of deaths and serious injuries each year.

We are currently upgrading old wet film cameras with new digital units through a safety camera replacement programme. This programme will help to maintain the benefit of the safety camera network to Londoners into the future. Due to this ongoing programme, no new safety camera sites are currently being considered for installation. Once the safety camera replacement programme has been complete, we will be identifying suitable locations for new safety cameras by employing a risk-based approach that prioritises higher risk locations, rather than solely targeting sites that have experienced historic casualty trends. The MPS will also be making increased use of mobile speed enforcement technology to increase coverage and deterrence. Further details about how we are improving compliance with speed limits is available in the Vision Zero Action Plan available at: http://content.tfl.gov.uk/vision-zero-action-plan.pdf

Safety cameras are only one of the ways to tackle speed related deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We work in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to undertake many other speed management initiatives, including Community Road Watch. Community Roadwatch aims to reduce speeding in residential areas, and gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local police teams, and use speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles in their communities. To take part in Community Roadwatch, or to suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, members of the public can contact [email protected] stating the borough where they live. Enquiries will be forwarded to the relevant local MPS Safer Transport Team, who will be in touch.

The public can report dangerous, illegal, or antisocial road user behaviour directly to the police via their online reporting tool, RoadSafe London. Every report helps the police and TfL to understand where and when bad road user behaviour takes place. The information and intelligence gathered via this tool is used to inform the activity of the police and partners. The tool is available online at https://www.met.police.uk/report/report-a-road-traffic-incident/
