You asked

We're university students analyzing the case of environmental the introduction of contactless in TFL and we wanted to compare data pre-contactless and post. So we would like to have the data 2010-2020 regarding: - Paper Tickets Sold - Cost per Paper Ticket - Oyster Card: who issues them? what's the estimate cost per card (CO2 & €) ? - Total trips made per year - Total trips with paper ticket vs Total trips contactless (2010-2020) - CO2 Data per trip? or overall per year? - CO2 in London 2010-2020 - We want to see if this trend is affected by introduction of contactless. This info will be super useful in building our case around Contactless = Greener cities Thanks in advance :)

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2727-2021 Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24th March 2021 asking for information about the environmental impact of digitizing urban mobility. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. Specifically you asked: “We're university students analyzing the case of environmental the introduction of contactless in TFL and we wanted to compare data pre-contactless and post. - CO2 in London 2010-2020 - We want to see if this trend is affected by introduction of contactless.” In answer to your first four questions, the tables below show the number of paper (magnetic) tickets issued and the number of trips made with paper tickets, Oyster Cards and via contactless payment cards (CPCs – which include smartcards as well as smart devices). In terms of the cost of paper tickets, this information is not held. The cost is included in the current ticketing contract with Cubic (and has been included in previous contracts since 1998). The costs are part of core contract deliverables and are not identified separately. In terms of Oyster cards, TfL assumed responsibility for card procurement in 2013. Prior to that it was included in the ticketing contract with the TranSys consortium. The card suppliers under our contracts from 2013-2020 were ASK, Austria Card, Exceet and Gemalto. We entered into new contracts in 2020 and our current card suppliers are Austria Card, Exceet, Idemia and Paragon, although we have not yet ordered any cards under the new contracts due to low demand. Card costs were not identified separately in the period 2010-2013 as this was part of core contract deliverables. From 2013 we estimate that procurement costs would be an average of 65p-70p per card. Contractor costs to enable the cards are in addition and are estimated as 15p per card. CO2 data is not available in relation to cards. This also includes normalised data on emissions per passenger km on these modes – 2019/20 is excluded as the impact of the first lockdown in March 2020 reduced passenger numbers. In answer to your sixth question, TfL does not hold this data but I would refer you to the London Energy and Greenhouse Gas Inventory (LEGGI) which can be found online here: https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/leggi If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
