FOI request detail

average number of contactless users making different numbers of journeys per week in zone 1-2

Request ID: FOI-2667-1819
Date published: 04 February 2019

You asked

I’d like to understand the weekly travel behaviours of contactless and Oyster public transport users in zone 1-2. If this analysis is too onerous, could you please suggest a different way of providing similar information? Please provide the average number of contactless users making different numbers of journeys per week in zone 1-2 (i.e. X users make 21 journeys in zone 1-2 per week , Y users make 20 journeys in zone 1-2 per week and so on, covering all observed weekly journey frequencies). Ideally this would be segmented between bus and non bus (LU/Rail) journeys.

TfL Ref: 2667-1819

Thank you for your email received by us on 8 January 2019 asking for information about the average number of contactless users making different numbers of journeys per week in Travelcard zones One and Two following your previous requests for information (previous references: 2276/2277/2278/2279-1819).

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

the average number of contactless users making different numbers of journeys per week in zone 1-2 (i.e. X users make 21 journeys in zone 1-2 per week , Y users make 20 journeys in zone 1-2 per week and so on, covering all observed weekly journey frequencies). Ideally this would be segmented between bus and non bus (LU/Rail) journeys.

Please see the attached table providing the number of people making London Underground, London Overground, TfL Rail, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and National Rail journeys between Zones One and Two from 7 to 13 January 2019. A week’s data rather than an average has been provided due to the following factors:

• We only hold data for the last eight weeks.

• The Christmas holidays would distort the results due to bank holidays and the various changes in journey patterns that occur during the festive period.

Please note that the ‘Count of tokens’ column refers to the number of individual cards used, whilst the first column lists the number of journeys made between zones One and Two.
We are not able to provide data on bus journeys between zones 1 and 2 because the fares system does not use Travelcard zones for bus journeys. Since bus passengers are not required to tap out when exiting the bus, alighting points are not recorded in this way.
Trying to process an average could exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 given the volume of data that would need to be retrieved, extracted and processed for the purposes of this request.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
