FOI request detail

London Underground Emergency Stops

Request ID: FOI-2628-1819
Date published: 28 January 2019

You asked

I would like to know how many emergency stops were carried out on all London Underground lines in the year of 2018. Please list the stops by line, and provide the direction of travel as well as the date and time. If you could indicate which of these emergency stops were caused by passengers obstructing the doors - if such data exists - then I request that to be included too. I would like the information for the following lines: Bakerloo Line London Overground Central Line Circle Line District Line Hammersmith and City Line Jubilee Line Metropolitan Line Northern Line Piccadilly Line Victoria Line Waterloo and City Line I was travelling recently on a Northern Line train where a passenger had something stuck in the door, and when they pulled it to try and free it the train did an emergency stop (confirmed by the driver). I would like to know how often trains come to an emergency stop - emergency application of the brakes - due to passengers’ belongings getting stuck in the doors. If this data is not available, then providing me with data of number of emergency stops (as defined above - not emergency levers) along with number of times a passenger obstructed the doors while the train was stationary would suffice. Still broken down in the categories that I asked for in my original request.

We answered

Our Ref:          FOI-2628-1819

Thank you for your request received on 8 January 2019 asking for information about emergency stops on the London Underground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

Number of times a passenger obstructed the doors while the train was stationary would suffice. Still broken down in the categories that I asked for in my original request.

Please find the requested information attached. We do not hold information on the direction of travel.

Do you not have any data regarding items trapped in the doors while the train is moving?

We do not hold this information as the train would not be moving if something was trapped in the doors, as the Train Operator would not get a “Door Closed Visual” and thus the train would not be able to leave the station.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
