Request ID: FOI-2565-2223 Date published: 02 February 2023
You asked
Good evening
Please may you provide me with the number of electric vehicles that have entered the congestion charge zone per month for each month since January 2018.
Please may you provide the same information for the ULEZ zone areas?
If it is easier to group “electric vehicles” into those that have the electric vehicle exemption applied to them, that is fine.
We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-2565-2223
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12th January 2023 asking for information about electric vehicles entering the Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emission zones.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Please may you provide me with the number of electric vehicles that have entered the congestion charge zone per month for each month since January 2018.
Please may you provide the same information for the ULEZ zone areas?
If it is easier to group “electric vehicles” into those that have the electric vehicle exemption applied to them, that is fine.”
Note that we do not record the number of electric vehicles being driven in the Congestion Charging zone nor the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ). For ULEZ, all electric vehicles meet the relevant emissions standards and are compliant. We therefore have no reason to record this information. For Congestion Charging, battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are eligible for the cleaner vehicle discount which entitles the vehicle to a 100% discount from the charge. This is subject to registration with us.
When a vehicle is registered for the CVD and driven in the Congestion Charging zone during charging hours the registration is still captured by the camera network, and it is then matched against the same vehicle registration listed on the CVD account and removed from the scope of the scheme.
The table below shows the number of times per month a vehicle registered on CVD account has been driven in the zone. Please note that this is not unique vehicle registrations but every journey. So if one vehicle registered on a CVD account makes 100 journeys into the zone in a given year it is counted 100 times. The data is correct up to and including the 19th January 2023.
