Our Ref: FOI-2427-2122
Thank you for your request received on 25 January 2022 asking for information about our advertising revenue.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:
Please include the following information: • TfL’s annual income from advertising, by financial year, from 2015-16, until 2020-21, including all years in between
The revenue for 2015/2016 was £90m, this includes advertising, newspapers, partnerships and filming but excludes Intellectual Property Rights and copyright. Please note that we were working under a different advertising contract in 2015/2016 which had different commercial terms.
Information on advertising revenue for the remaining period requested is available in the annual Advertising Reports published on our website:
In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.
Please include in these figures the amount of money made each year from gambling adverts and adverts which have since been banned after the ban on “body-shaming” ads and “junk food ads.”
Information regarding gambling adverts is published in a response to a previous FOI request:
We do not hold information on adverts that have since been “banned” as we have not banned any brands outright – each campaign and/or product is judged on a case by case basis as to whether it complies with our policy. Our policy has been updated over time to include clauses focusing on unhealthy or unrealistic body shapes and body confidence as well as food and drink products that are high in fat, salt and sugar. With regard to the ‘Beach Body Ready’ advert, the advertiser can still advertise on network but not with the creative that was originally used.
Any adverts on our network must adhere to our Advertising Policy: https://content.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-advertising-policy-250219.pdf.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please feel free to contact me.
