A40 Refurbishment

Request ID: FOI-2419-2122
Date published: 15 February 2022

You asked

I understand you are project managing the refurbishment of the A40 Westway and I wanted to know if the refurbishment will include the following: Will the work include repairing the hard shoulder wall protection (safety barriers) which desperately needs painting/restoring in many sections of the Westway? and for over 20 years there is an overhead gantry (westbound middle section of Westway) which has the matrix signals missing. Can at least the empty signal box on the third lane be removed from the gantry? Will you be installing more up to date messaging signalling and removing the old amber lights on the gantries which I assume no longer work?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2419-2122

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 23 January 2022, asking about the refurbishment of the A40 Westway.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

Q1. Will the work include repairing the hard shoulder wall protection (safety barriers) which desperately needs painting/restoring in many sections of the Westway?

TfL is currently undertaking targeted and essential structural maintenance work to renew several components which have reached the end of their service life along the A40 Westway section. The A40 Westway is a group of 52 individual structure assets along 4.6km of the largely elevated road between Wood Lane Flyover to the west and Marylebone Flyover to the East). Given the scale of the structure and the limited capital funds available to TfL to undertake these works, the current plan is to complete the essential maintenance of the Westway in phases:

Phase 1 - replace the high priority and safety critical  roller shutter expansion over Acklam Road - work started on site in Autumn 2021 with the aim to complete in the Summer 2022.

Phase 2 work is currently being progressed and will include further investigation and assessment of the existing hard shoulder wall (bridge parapet) protection (vehicle Restraint Systems) at high risk locations over the railway lines to determine if additional protection measures/treatments are required. The details of any proposals will be known once investigations, assessment and design work is complete, currently planned in late 2022.

Q2. and for over 20 years there is an overhead gantry (westbound middle section of Westway) which has the matrix signals missing. Can at least the empty signal box on the third lane be removed from the gantry?

There is currently no plan to remove redundant equipment on the gantries.

Q3. Will you be installing more up to date messaging signalling and removing the old amber lights on the gantries which I assume no longer work?

There is currently no plan to remove redundant equipment on the gantries.
