Our Ref:         FOI-2381-1920

Thank you for your request received on 7 November 2019 asking for information about advertising revenue.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

How much money did TFL earn from advertising revenue (total) in the last annual recorded annual period (2018/2019, if available)

In the last annual recorded period (2018/2019) the TfL estate earned a total of £156m from advertising revenue. This information is available in the TfL Annual Report and Statement of Accounts published on our website:

http://content.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-annual-report-and-statement-of-accounts-2018-19.pdf

How much money was earned from online advertising and online marketing trackers (on TFL websites)?

The value earned from online advertising on the TfL website during the 2018/19 period was approximately £818,978.72.

Which tube station earned most from outdoor advertising (including banners, posters etc.) in the period of 2017/2018 and how much was this?

The Tube station that earns the highest level of revenue from outdoor advertising is Oxford Circus station. This is due in part to some of its unique advertising opportunities. However, we cannot release the level of revenue made as this is commercially sensitive to our advertising partner Global.

In accordance with the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply the revenue received for this station as it is subject to a statutory exemption to the right of access to information under section 43(2).

Disclosure of this information is therefore subject to a statutory exemption to the right of access to information under section 43(2). In this instance the section 43(2) exemption has been applied as disclosure would be likely to prejudice our ability to achieve best value from our advertising estate.

The use of this exemption is subject to an assessment of the public interest in relation to the disclosure of the information concerned. We recognise the need for openness and transparency by public authorities, but in this instance the public interest in ensuring that we are able to achieve the best value from our advertising estate outweighs the general public interest in increasing transparency of our processes.

How much money was earned from junk food advertising in the past 12 available months/last annual available period (please state the annual period)?

There is no clear definition of the term ‘junk food’. Therefore, we cannot allocate a level of revenue to junk food advertising. In February of this year we amended our Advertising Policy and no longer accept ads for products high in fat, salt and sugar. The policy uses the Nutrient Profiling Model, managed by Public Health England (PHE).
