Request ID: FOI-2328-2223 Date published: 16 January 2023
You asked
Follow up from 2188 - Would it be possible to access detailed daily data for 2017-2020, rather than aggregate figures?
We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-2328-2223
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14 December 2022, asking for daily journey counts for 2017-2020.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
Please find the requested data attached.
These journey counts are taken from Oyster & Contactless cards/devices data source used for analytical purposes, and do not include journeys made using paper tickets. Additionally, it doesn’t include incomplete journeys or stations with temporarily open gatelines.
As TfL’s Rail services are interconnected and offer interchange between modes, mode assignment is inferred based on “tap” data at the origin and destination. If a journey’s origin or destination is solely served by Underground services, it is counted as an LU journey. If the other end of the journey is solely served by another mode, such as Overground, the journey will also be counted as an Overground journey. In cases where there are multiple services at a station, where the mode cannot be inferred in this way, the journeys are counted as ‘Other Rail’.
Please note the period 17th April to 22nd May 2020 shows no data, as during the initial period of COVID-19 restrictions, bus boardings were via the centre doors and tickets were not able to be validated. In the absence of this data, and given the nature of the restrictions and advice at the time, it would not be possible to accurately count journeys, and as such the processing of this analytical dataset was paused.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
